When a new baby is born in Australia, the parents complete a birth registration form. This form can be found online or given to them from their midwife or attending doctor or nurse. Parents have 60 days to register the birth (including the name).
Once the birth has been registered, parents can order a birth certificate which they will use as their child's identification document for medicare, early learning and so forth.
Commemorative certificates are also available and are wonderful framed or added to the baby's photo or scrapbook album, but they are not legal documents and cannot be used for identification.
